SEATTLE - Freshman Chelsey Schofield along with sophomore Morgan Odale turned in solid all-around performances but the University of Utah volleyball team fell 3-0 at No. 3 Washington (17-25, 26-28, 14-25) in a Pac-12 Conference match Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Utah (7-11, 2-7 Pac-12) was able to limit Washington to a .183 efficiency on the attack, the Huskies' third-lowest mark of the season. Unfortunately, Utah could only muster a .081 mark. The Huskies also held a 10.0 to 8.0 edge over the Utes in team blocks.
Schofield finished just two kills short of her third career double-double as she tied for team-high honors with eight kills, tied for second on the squad with 11 digs then led the way for the Ute defense at the net with four blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale also turned in eight kills to go with 11 digs, which left her just two kills shy of her 13th career double-double and her fourth this season.
Freshman outside hitter Shelby Dalton was the third Ute with eight kills. The Moab, Utah native posted a team-high .250 hitting percentage after committing only three errors on 20 attack attempts.
Sophomore libero Nikki Sim posted a team-high 13 digs and has reached double-figures in dig in 14 out of 18 matches so far in 2011.
Coordinating the Ute attack was McKenzie Odale, who turned in a team-high 18 assists to go with nine digs, which left her just one dig shy of her seventh career double-double and fifth this season. Abby Simmons added seven assists.
The first set was tied four times, the last coming at 6-6, before Washington strung together three consecutive points and built its lead to as many as eight as the Huskies took a 25-17 first-set victory. Dalton collected three kills and Schofield had a pair of blocks.
In a back-and-forth affair in the second set, the frame was tied 16 times (16-16) before Washington inched out to a 19-16 lead with three consecutive scores. Utah struck back with three straight of its own to force the 17th tie of the frame at 19-19. The Huskies took the next point for a 20-19 lead before the Utes countered with three consecutive points to climb to a 22-20 lead. The set was even for the 22nd time at 26 all before a kill by Kylin Munoz and a service ace by Summer Ross gave the Huskies a 28-26 victory.
The third frame was even at four points each, but Washington turned in a 9-0 stretch to assume a 13-4 lead. The Huskies never led by fewer than eight the rest of the way en route to a 25-14 match-clinching win.
No. 3 Washington (15-1, 7-1 Pac-12) was led by 14 kills and seven digs from Krista Vansant.
The Utes return to Crimson Court for a pair of Pac-12 matches next weekend, starting Friday against Arizona State at 7 p.m. The match can be seen live at utahutes.com.
