The Utah men's swimming and diving team squeezed by Air Force, 152-148, Thursday at Cadet Natorium. The meet came down to the final four events, in which the Utes outscored the Falcons, 50-24, and placed first in all four races.
"It was a really close meet," Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. "I am proud of the guys who fought through to the end. It was great to beat AF at their own pool and to get the win."
Fiascone proved himself by winning the 100 back again for the second meet in a row with a time of 51.83 while Major Robinson touched in fourth (52.70).
Karson Applin had a great showing as he raced in the 200 fly for the first time in his collegiate career and touched in a time of 1:54.73 to take second. Applin also won the 100 fly (50.35).
Nick Soedel took the top spot in both the 50 free (20.77) and the 100 free (45.96).
The 200 back was won by Major Robinson (1:53.98) while Eric Murray won the 200 IM (1:58.76) with Ken Tiltges coming in second (1:58.76). Tiltges also grabbed third in the 100 breast (59.96).
Bjorn Gunnarsson contributed points in the 50 free when he touched in a time of 21.50 to take second place in the event.
Two third-places were earned by Winter Heaven in the 200 free (1:44.31) and the 100 free (47.20).
Other notable Ute performances include a second-place for Corey Williams in the 200 breast (2:12.30) and Eric Bonicelli's third-place finish in the 1000 free (10:07.87).
The relays were impressive as both the 400 free relay (1:58.76) and the 200 medley relay (1:13.23) had first-place finishes. The free relay consisted of Gunnarsson, Heaven, Andy Lamb and Soedel with Fiascone, Titges, Applin and Soedel making up the medley relay team.
The Ute men were fantastic on the boards. Brandon Stopplemoor placed first in the 3-meter dive (316.58), Nelson Foo took the runner-up spot (294.60) and Caleb Herrick rounded out the top spots with third (287.60). Foo took the top spot in the 1-meter dive with 319.28 points while Stoppelmoor was right behind in second with 313.65 points, setting a new personal record. Caleb Herrick came in fifth (228.68).
Today, the men and women's team reunite to face Colorado School of Mines at CSM Natatorium at 5 p.m.
