SAN ANTONIO - Led by 19 points from Michelle Plouffe, the Utah women's basketball team defeated Detroit to open the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic, 64-55 on Friday evening in San Antonio.
After Detroit (0-5) led at halftime, 28-27, the Utes (2-2) took over in the second half to take the lead. Utah took a quick four-point advantage in the first minute out of the locker room on a layup from Plouffe and a three-pointer by Rachel Messer. Detroit's Chanahl Putnam scored five points of her own to put the Titans back on top, 33-32 with 15:14 remaining.
The Ute defense able to take control from there, holding Detroit to 0-for-6 from the floor over the next 10 minutes. The Titans scored just five points over the span, all off of free throws. The Titans scored just 10 points through the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Offensively, Utah scored 18 points over the same 10-minute span, and led by as many as 13 points in the second half, 53-40 with 4:44 left in the half. Detroit was unable to come closer than seven points in the final minutes.
"That was a really good win for us against a really unusual matchup," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "They play triangle and two, which is neither zone or man, and it was an unusual thing to go against early in the season. I was really proud of how hard we played in the second half after having a little tryptophan hangover from all the turkey we had yesterday. But we played hard in the second half and managed enough defensive plays to get a really important win for us."
The game was tightly officiated, leading to 51 total free-throw shots. The Utes went 15-for-25 from the charity stripe while Detroit was 19-for-26.
"We didn't shoot free throws as well as I would have liked, but more than that it was just our first half lethargy," Levrets said. "We just were lethargic and didn't play very hard, and that's not who we are. We play incredibly hard, and we answered that in the second half and played much harder than we did in the first half."
Four players were in double figures for the Utes, led by Plouffe's 19. Janita Badon had a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Taryn Wicijowski had 11 points while Messer also scored 11 for the Utes.
Detroit was led by Shareta Brown's 14 points and six rebounds.
The Utes continue at the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. MT against South Alabama.
