SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah swimming and diving team arrived in Oklahoma City on Monday to compete at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships. Competition is set to start on Wednesday evening and close on Saturday night.
"We're going to swim really fast and keep our thoughts focused on what we can do," said head coach Greg Winslow. "We can't control how fast others swim but we can take care of what we do in our lanes and stay focused in our races."
Based on votes by conference swimming coaches at the beginning of the season, the UNLV men and BYU women are favored to win the 2011 MWC Championships. The Rebel men garnered 25 points in the poll while the Cougar women earned the top spot with 62 points.
The Ute women were 5-3 in conference dual meets and 8-6 overall this season. They were pegged to tie with Colorado State for fifth in the preseason coaches' poll with 33 points. Currently, Utah is fourth among the MWC teams.
The Utah men's squad heads into the championships with an 0-5 record in conference and is 3-8 overall. In the preseason coaches' poll, Utah men were predicted to place fifth and are currently in sixth place based on standings.
Last year at the 2010 MWC Championships, the Utah women placed fifth overall (377) while the men placed sixth overall (401). For more information, read last week's release at http://utahutes.cstv.com/sports/c-swim/spec-rel/021511aaa.html.
"Since January, we have been swimming better and better," Winslow said. "I'm excited to see how well we do this weekend."
