SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Utah baseball team won its second game of the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Friday, defeating Santa Clara, 5-3.
Utah scattered their five runs over four innings. Zach Adams earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. Ben Mordini closed out the game and allowed no hits with three strikeouts.
Trey Nielsen drove in three of Utah's runs, going 3-for-5 at the plate. James Brooks, Michael Beltran and C.J. Cron each had two hits.
"Our pitching continues to shine," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Adams really pitched well again. He got into some trouble all day and pitched out of it all day long. Several times they had runners in scoring position he did a nice job of getting outs. We had really good at-bats and hit the ball extremely hard, but only got five runs. I am encouraged by that, but we need to break out and hopefully score a bunch of runs at some point. Trey had a good game today. He swung the bat pretty well and played good defense, so I am encouraged by his performance tonight.
Cron got the scoring started for the Utes in the first inning. Beltran hit a one-out single to center and scored on Cron's double to right center for a 1-0 lead. The Utes added runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Shaun Cooper and Nielsen each doubled in the fourth to send a runner home and Nielsen hit his first career home run in the top of the sixth.
Utah (4-6) took a 5-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Brooks reached base with a single and Beltran put two on when he was hit by a pitch. Cron was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cooper flied out to right field to score Brooks for the first run of the inning. Cody Guymon again loaded the bases when he walked before Nielsen singled home Beltran for his third RBI of the game.
Santa Clara left two on base in the fourth, but did not score until the seventh. Curtis Wagner led off the inning with a single and after two batters walked to load the bases, Justin Viele was hit by the pitch to send a run in before Adams got Blake Leyva to ground into a double play to get out of the inning.
Utah stranded two on base in the eighth before Santa Clara put a late scare into the Utes, taking advantage of two walks and an error to send a pair of runs across the plate before Mordini got out of the inning.
Utah continues at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament against San Jose State on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. PT.
