PALO ALTO, Calif.- The 71st-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (5-8) fell to second-ranked Stanford (14-0, 2-0 Pac-10), by a score of 6-0, Monday, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
"You learn a lot about your team when you play on the road against the defending national champions," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We will use what we learned to grow as a team and narrow the gap between us and the best team in our future league."
The teams opted to play singles first and forgo doubles due forecasted rain.
At the No. 5 singles spot, sophomore Paige Miles fell to 51st-ranked Stacey Tan 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Lucia Kovarcikova dropped a, 6-2, 6-1, decision to 21st-ranked Kristie Ahn at the No 3. position.
Senior Evgenia Kryuchkova, ranked No. 105, fell to 29th-ranked Mallory Burdette at the No. 2 spot 6-3, 6-4. Junior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 77, dropped a, 6-3, 6-3, decision to second-ranked Hilary Barte at the No. 1 position, giving Stanford the win at 4-0.
Freshman Sarah Pham fell, 6-2, 7-6, at the No. 4 spot to 11th-ranked Nicole Gibbs, while redshirt sophomore Lexi Provancha dropped a, 6-3, 6-4, decision to Carolyn McVeigh at the No. 6 spot, making the final score 6-0 in favor of the Cardinal. The win over Utah extended Stanford's home winning streak to an NCAA-record 174 consecutive matches.
The Utes return home to host 54th-ranked Oregon (7-7, 1-4 Pac-10) Wednesday, March 23, at the Eccles Tennis Center at 1 p.m. MT.
