SALT LAKE CITY - Big innings lifted the Utah baseball team to a 15-3 win over Utah Valley on Tuesday evening.
With Utah leading 4-3 after three innings, the Utes slowly started to take control, starting with a two-run fourth inning with RBI hits from Shaun Cooper and Cody Guymon. Utah added three runs in the sixth inning, as Guymon drove in two with his single.
A well-placed bunt on a squeeze play from Michael Beltran gave Utah a run in the seventh before the Utes capped off the night with a five-run eighth inning. Austin Shackelford had a two-RBI triple to right center and Josh Alexander, Beltran and C.J. Cron also drove in runs.
Utah had 17 hits, compared to just six for Utah Valley. Cooper led the Utes at the plate with a 4-for-4 night, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Shackelford was a home run away from a cycle, with a single, triple and double in a 3-for-5 night. He drove in three runs. James Brooks was 3-for-4 while Guymon and Beltran each drove in three runs. Cron went 2-for-3 with two walks, extending his hitting streak to 29 games.
Joe Pond went five innings on the mound, allowing all three of Utah Valley's runs and had five strikeouts. He earned his second win of the season to raise his record to 2-3 on the year. The Utes used five pitchers in the game, with Stephen Streich, Luke West, Tyler Andersen and Tyler Shreve all making an appearance on the mound. It was Shreve's first career appearance.
"I was very proud of our guys coming out and playing hard on a Tuesday night," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We are starting to get comfortable and things are going well in all phases of the game. What I most wanted tonight was for us to come out with a good effort, and we did that tonight."
Utah Valley was led by two hits from Goose Kallunki. Starter Kyle Beecher (1-2) earned the loss.
Utah continues at home this weekend with a three-game series against UNLV, beginning on Friday, April 1, at 6:00 p.m.
