OKLAHOMA CITY - At the end of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday, senior Natalie Edge was awarded the Senior Recognition Award for being an exemplary MWC female student-athlete.
"Natalie Edge is one of the most special people I've ever met in my life, not only as an athlete but as a person," said head coach Greg Winslow. "She's an amazing woman. She cares about the team and other people. First and foremost, she worries about being a friend and a leader, before she worries about herself."
The Senior Recognition Award is bestowed upon senior student-athletes who exemplify the high standards of the MWC. It is based upon their athletic performances, academic achievements, and other noteworthy qualities, such as leadership.
"I wasn't expecting to get this award at all so it came as a huge surprise," Edge said.
For the 2010-11 season, Edge has served Utah's swimming and diving squad as a team captain.
At the 2011 MWC Championships, Edge placed fourth in the 100 free relay (50.02), eighth in the 50 free (22.97) and 200 free (1:50.64). She also assisted in the school-record breaking relays including the first-place 400 free relay (3:18.87), the fifth-place 200 medley relay (1:40.42), the second-place 200 free relay (1:31.16), and the winning all-time conference record breaking 400 medley relay (3:38.33).
"Knowing that all of the coaches vote on this award, I'm humbled to know that I was picked," the senior said. "It will always remind me that despite the fact we're all on different teams, everyone is watching you and your actions."
"We're really going to miss her," said Winslow. "She's one of the best Utes of all time."
