SAN DIEGO - The Utah baseball team avoided the weekend sweep with a 10-6 win over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon to close out the three-game series.
Utah held a 5-2 lead through the first three innings. Shaun Cooper hit a three-run home run in the first inning and the Utes used three hits to push two runs across the plate in the third. San Diego State loaded the bases in the third inning, but were only able to push one run across the plate as reliever Luke West entered the game to get the final out of the inning and get the Utes out of the jam.
The Utes increased the lead to 8-2 in the sixth inning, with Austin Shackelford hitting a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs.
The Aztecs made a push in the late innings, taking advantage of Utah miscues to score four more runs. With the Utes up 9-2 in the seventh after Cody Guymon's RBI infield hit added a run for Utah in the top of the inning, SDSU scored two unearned runs in the seventh after a pair of errors. The Utes would add one more run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from James Brooks, but SDSU came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs, again taking advantage of walks and errors, before reliever Tyler Wagner forced the final out of the inning.
"I wasn't very happy with the way that we played all weekend, but we salvaged today with timely hitting," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Luke West really pitched well for us in the middle innings today. We'll get back after it on Tuesday night against Utah Valley."
West, who went 3 1/3 innings, earned his first win of the year. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on three hits. Wagner pitched the final three innings for his eighth save of the year. Ben Mordini got the start, striking out two and allowing three hits.
Brooks led Utah at the plate with a 4-for-5 day. He had three doubles. Cooper, Shackelford and Jo Jo Sharrar each had three hits.
C.J. Cron, who was intentionally walked twice, did not have a hit for the first time this season, ending his hitting streak at 32 games.
Utah heads to Orem on Tuesday evening to face Utah Valley at 6:00 p.m.
