SALT LAKE CITY - Austin Shackelford's second-inning home run highlighted the Utah baseball team's 4-1 exhibition game loss to the AAA Salt Lake Bees on Tuesday evening.
"It was a great evening," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We appreciate everyone from the Angels and Bees for allowing us to play tonight. It was a fun event for our guys. It was relaxed."
James Brooks led Utah at the plate, going 2-for-2 on the evening. Shaun Cooper and Jo Jo Sharrar also had hits for the Utes.
The Bees took advantage of walks to get on board in the first inning, as Tyson Auer scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeff Baisley, before Shackelford tied the game in the second with his home run over the right field fence, 1-1.
The Bees took the lead in the third on an RBI single from Paul McAnulty, completing their scoring with solo home runs in the fourth inning (Kevin Melillo) and sixth inning (Jeremy Moore).
Utah threw a different pitcher in each inning. Ben Mordini got the start and had one strikeout. Josh Chapman threw in the second inning and did not allow a hit, while Chapman and Stephen Streich did not allow a run to score. Tyler Anderson had two strikeouts in the sixth inning. Luke West and Nick Green also pitched.
"The first four innings we threw four freshmen on the mound, and they did ok," Kinneberg said. "It was a good learning experience for them. Hopefully they can build on this."
Utah (12-10) returns to Mountain West Conference play on Friday, April 8, against San Diego State.
