EUGENE, Ore. - University of Utah sophomore Amanda Mergaert earned the top 1500m qualifying time from the West Regionals in the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. The Shelby Township, Mich., native, broke the school record and qualified for her first career NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance.
"Overall we had some frustrations today and could not take advantage of situations," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We are very happy for Amanda and I am proud of the effort that all our kids gave throughout the week."
In the 1500m race, Mergaert gained the spotlight with a school-record time of 4:16.57, which broke her previous personal record by more than five seconds. Mergaert's effort earned her first place in the event as well as the top qualifying time overall from both regionals for the NCAA Championships. Her time also met the "B standard" for the U.S Championships held on June 23.
In her final race as a Ute, senior Alyssa Abbott competed in the 1500m and was slowed down by an athlete that fell down in the final 300m of the race. Abbott finished the event with a time of 4:28.07 (22nd place).
"Sometimes that is how it goes," commented Kepler. "This does not take away from what she has done from our program. She is an eight time NCAA qualifier and had a terrific career at Utah."
In the high jump, wet weather conditions affected all of the athletes that competed. Brianna LeRoy led the way for the Utes with a jump of 5-7, which earned her 16th place. Junior Langley Iverson finished 24th overall clearing the mark of 5-5. The overall winner of the event was Arizona's Brigetta Barrett with a jump of 5-8.75.
Mergaert will represent the Utes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 8 in Des Moines, Iowa.
