SALT LAKE CITY - Despite a late comeback, the Utah baseball team fell to San Diego State, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon.
San Diego State held an 11-1 lead before the Utes began a comeback that would see Utah cut the lead to three runs. The rally began in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back solo home runs from C.J. Cron and Shaun Cooper.
Utah continued its drive at the plate in the eighth. After Josh Alexander walked and Jo Jo Sharrar doubled before James Brooks hit a three-run home run. Michael Beltran, Cron and Cooper all reached base to load them for Cody Guymon, whose sacrifice fly scored Beltran. Cron scored on a Trey Nielsen single to cut the SDSU lead to 11-8 before reliever Bryan Crabb got Austin Shackelford to ground out and end the inning.
The Aztecs pulled back ahead in the ninth inning, adding three runs for a 14-8 lead. Chris Wilson had a two-RBI single and pinch hitter Mitch Bluman also had an RBI single.
Although Brooks had a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, Crabb closed out the game for the Aztecs with a strikeout of Beltran.
Guymon had three hits to lead Utah at the plate. Cron was 2-for-3 with a walk and he was hit by a pitch.
Utah used five pitchers. Starter Brock Duke went three innings and gave up six runs with four strikeouts. He earned his first loss of the season and falls to 6-1. Ben Mordini, Josh Chapman, Kesley Kondo and Tyler Anderson all saw action on the mound.
The Ute pitchers combined for 10 walks, compared to 12 total strikeouts. SDSU out-hit Utah just 14-13. Although Utah was making hard contact most of the game, the Utes struggled to find the gaps.
The Aztecs took a 7-0 through the first four innings, as the Ute pitchers struggled with walks and SDSU took advantage of the base runners with timely hitting.
The Utes left the bases loaded in the third inning before putting a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Nielsen scored after heads-up base running after Sharrar reached on an error.
San Diego State continued to pull away in the seventh, scoring four runs to go ahead 11-1.
