DES MOINES, Iowa-University of Utah runner Amanda Mergaert capped off a terrific season with a 14th-place finish in the 1500m race at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The sophomore from Shelby Township, Mich. finished with a time of 4:19.96, which was 1.4 seconds shy of qualifying for the final round on Saturday.
"This was a really technical race and she put herself in good position, but just did not finish in the top-five spots of the heat," said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler. "Mergaert had a terrific season and handled the pressure very well in her first time at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She ran with the best runners in the country and was with them the whole time. Unfortunately, the season comes to an end by 1.4 seconds."
Mergaert made her first career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with the top-qualifying time from either regional of 4:16.57 in the 1500m race. In the first heat of the 1500m event at the NCAA Championships, Mergaert was right with the leading pack the entire way and posted a solid time of 1:03 in the final lap of the race. However at the end of the race, Mergaert finished sixth in the heat with a time of 4:19.96 (top five spots automatically qualify for final round), which was 1.4 seconds shy of qualifying for the final round based on the time of other athletes. Mergaert's performance marked the second consecutive race that she broke the 4:20 barrier and has set a "class B" provisional time for the U.S Championships on June 23.
"She is disappointed with the final outcome today," commented Kepler. "I am pleased with her effort today and throughout the season. Our goal next year will be to make it to the finals."
