Utah Women's Tennis Heads To SDSU Fall Classic...
The University of Utah women's tennis team will head to the SDSU Fall Classic this weekend in San Diego, Calif. Tournament play begins Friday, Sept. 30, at the Aztec Tennis Center.
"We are excited for this upcoming weekend," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "For most of the young women it will be their first tournament of the year and it is taking place in a great venue against good competition. This will also help Anastasia [Putilina] and Paige [Miles] prepare for the All-American Championships a week later."
In addition to Utah and host school San Diego State, other teams competing at the tournament will be Houston, New Mexico State, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Northridge, and San Diego.
Pham Heads to All-American Prequalifiers...
While the rest of the Utes head to San Diego, sophomore Sarah Pham will compete in prequalifying singles play at the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 1-2. Pham and sophomore transfer Callie Craig will then play qualifying doubles play which will take place, Oct. 4-5, in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Craig was also participate in qualifying singles play.
Senior Anastasia Putilina will make her third consecutive tournament appearance when she competes in main draw singles play, running Oct. 6-9. Putilina and junior doubles partner Paige Miles will also compete in the main draw doubles bracket.
Last Time Out At the UNLV Invitational...
Craig and Pham are coming off a showing at the UNLV Invitational this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., where they both notched two singles wins a piece.
Craig downed Iris Verboven of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-3, on day one before topping Ole Miss' Julia Jones 6-1, 6-3, on day two.
Pham netted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, victory over Laura Bernard of Long Beach State on the first day and defeated Abby Guthrie of Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-7, 10-6, on the second day.
Putilina Ranked In Top 100...
Putilina earned a singles ranking of No.64 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason poll. Putilina has not gone unranked since receiving her first national ranking as a sophomore in April 2010.
