Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
"It was an awful lot of fun. We place a lot of emphasis on our defense. We did a really a really good job taking away some of their options and then the rim became about three times bigger than it has been recently for us, and the shots were going in. It was very rewarding to get off to that start."
On the Utes' 3-point shooting
"We did a really nice job of moving against their zone and making extra passes. I thought those guys [Cedric Martin, Chris Hines] and Kareem [Storey] with his six assists and just one turnover...that is the kind of ratio we are looking for."
On ASU's Zone
"In their game against Oregon they got down by a similar margin and stayed in their zone. You get a little fearful playing against that zone because a lot of our points in the first half came from the perimeter. Sometimes when you are zoning that is the best thing that can happen is to have the other team hit a couple shots because then you start depending on it rather than an inside presence."
On the ASU Offense
"They ran some action that we are familiar with. A lot of their plays are things that we have in our playbook that we started our season with. We junked some of it when it wasn't working so well. So when we went over the prep yesterday, our guys didn't have to learn all new sets, but we could tell our guys exactly what they were running."
On the team's focus
"We were really focused at shootaround and practice yesterday. It was a situation where there was a lot of desire and knowing the personnel on their team. I could tell when I walked into shootaround this morning that we had a lot of focus."
Junior guard Cedric Martin
On his 3-point shooting
"It was all due to Kareem. He got into the gap and passed it out. And the rim opened up for us."
Junior center Jason Washburn
"The feeling is indescribable. We got a lead early, something we are not always used to and we kept it. Not only did we keep it, but we kept building on it. If they made a play, we made another one right back at them. It was a good team effort all around."
"Coach likes to tell us all the time that if you get into the mindset defensively then the rim seems to open up. If you don't cheat the game than the rim gets big. That is where we started was on the defensive end. We played a complete game on the defensive end. Guys came down and made plays and that is the easiest part, to put it in the basket. It was a good team effort tonight by everybody."
Arizona State Head Coach Herb Sendek
"We had a great defensive possession to start the game and then from there on in it was a real struggle for us all the way around."
Surprised by the team's effort today?
"I don't have an easy answer for that. It's something that right now doesn't offer an easy explanation, other than the fact that we just did not play good basketball. We didn't put the ball in the hole and we didn't defend. I thought we had excellent preparation. We had a good session yesterday and we had a really sharp session this morning, but in the end we have to play at a higher level and make more plays than we did today. There's no amount of mental gymnastics that'll provide an easy answer for the quality of our play right now. We could throw out excuses but we are not prepared to do that."
