SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Utah track and field team had its afternoon cut short due to poor weather conditions on the third day of action at the Aztec Invitational. After competing in wet conditions for the first half of the day, the meet officials decided to cancel the remainder of the meet for safety concerns.
"It was a smart thing to cancel the meet. You don't want to see anybody get hurt," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The times of the kids that competed today were not amazing, but they competed well in very poor conditions. I am very proud of our kids. They competed very hard. Unfortunately, we didn't get as much done as we would have liked, but that is how things go sometimes in the spring. We fought hard this weekend and will turn our focus towards competing next week in Phoenix."
Before the action was canceled, the Utes competed in the 400m. Junior Lauryn McKay was first for the Utes and sixth overall finishing in 58.72 seconds. Alyssa Johnson earned 12th overall clocking a time of 1:00.15 for the Utes.
In her first 100m hurdles race of the season, Angela Kaplar got off to a good start. Kaplar struggled on the final three hurdles, but clocked a fourth-place time of 14.14 seconds.
Unfortunately for the Utes the meet was cancelled due to wet conditions before the shot put, discus, and pole vault events.
The Utes will continue their season on March 23 at the Arizona State Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.
