EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Brianna LeRoy becomes the first Utah track and field athlete to score team points at the Pac-12 Conference Championships after her seventh-place performance in the heptathlon.
"Today had its up and down moments, but I am proud with how Brianna competed this weekend," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The javelin didn't go as well as we would have liked, but that is how multi events go. It was not from a lack of effort, the heptathlon is just one of those things that if you can't find a rhythm in one event than it can really cost you in the overall standings. She set several PR's this weekend and it would be hard to ask for more, so all in all it was a good weekend and a great overall experience for us."
LeRoy entered the second day in third place and got the day off to a good start in the long jump. On her second attempt, LeRoy recorded her best mark with a jump of 18-9.75 feet finishing fourth place. However, on the second event of the day, LeRoy ran into some trouble in the javelin throw. Posting a foul on her final attempt, LeRoy finished with a sixth-place mark of 108-09 feet for 537 points.
In the final event, LeRoy tried to make up lost ground setting a career-best performance in the 800m. She clocked a time of 2:29.46 finishing 14th in the race capturing 700 points.
At the end of the day, LeRoy finished seventh setting a PR with 5,221 points. With her performance, LeRoy becomes the first Utah track and field athlete to earn team points in the Pac-12 Conference. She earned two team points, and the team is in sixth place heading into next weekend when the remaining events will be held.
"It was nice to get the first event of the Pac-12 Championships under our belt," Kepler said. "This is a learning experience for everyone as we make the conference transition. We will head home and have a good week of practice next week as we get ready to return here for the remaining events next weekend."
The Utes will continue action at the Pac-12 Conference Championships on May 12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
