Utes Head to NCAA Championships
SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's tennis team received two transfer commitments from sophomore Elena Najera-Salas and freshman Tereza Bekerova, head coach Mat Iandolo announced Monday.
"Elena is someone we heavily recruited out of high school," Iandolo said. "She is an incredibly hard worker and plays with a tremendous amount of heart. She will inspire her teammates with what she brings to the table everyday."
"Tereza was one of the top 100 junior tennis players in the world," Iandolo continued. "Like Elena, she is capable of competing at a very high level. It says a lot about our program that we were able to attract these two."
Najera-Salas, originally from San Diego, Calif., comes to the Utes from the University of Denver where she played two seasons.
"I am excited for this new beginning with a new team," Najera-Salas stated. "I know in my heart that I belong at Utah and I really like the atmosphere there. I am excited to play in the Pac-12 and start this new chapter in my life.
During her two years with the Pioneers Najera-Salas compiled an overall singles record of 33-29, going 19-21 in dual-match play primarily at the No. 2 spot. In doubles, she recorded a doubles mark of 27-28, going 19-19 in dual match action. Her freshman year, Najera-Salas was named DU's Most Valuable Freshman and made the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List for having a GPA of 3.5 or better.
Bekerova, a native of the Czech Republic, joins Utah from Stephen F. Austin State University where she spent her freshman year.
"I decided to go to Utah because of the great academics and the good tennis program," Bekerova stated. "I also have a friend and she talked very nicely about Utah's head coach Mat Iandolo. Utah has all of my requirements and I am very happy I can be there next fall."
In her freshman year Bekerova accrued an overall singles record of 23-10, going 12-6 in dual-match play at the No. 1 and No. 3 position. In doubles, Bekerova compiled an overall record of 31-5, going 16-4 at the No. 1 spot in dual-match action.
