LAS VEGAS - The success of Utah Women's Tennis continued into day three of the ITA Mountain Regional Champions in Las Vegas, Nev. Paige Miles and Tereza Bekerova advanced in doubles play and Sarah Pham moved on to the quarterfinals of singles play.
Fresh off their upset of the No. 6 seed yesterday, Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Sarah Richter were defeated by Dominique Dulski and Natasha Smith of New Mexico, 8-3.
Pham, currently the owner of the No. 66 national ranking, recorded a third-round victory over Iren Kotseva of UNLV, 6-2, 6-4. She will be the final Ute standing as she then knocked off Teal Vosburgh of Boise State, 6-1, 7-5. Tomorrow, Pham will square off against Dorotttya Jonas of Wyoming in the quarterfinals
Ranked No. 62 nationally in singles competition, Bekerova topped Natasha Smith of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-0 in round three, but was upset by Colorado's Nuria Ormeno, 6-3, 6-4, in the fourth round.
Callie Craig defeated Maureen Slattery of Denver 6-4, 7-6, but Lucia Kovarcikova was not as fortunate, falling to No. 5 seed Michelle Okhremchuk of Nevada. Craig was then topped in the next round by No. 8 seed Veronica Popovici of Wyoming, 6-4, 7-5.
In consolation singles action, Dhanielly Quevedo of CU bumped off Richter, 6-4, 6-4 and Erica Valimaki fought valiantly before falling to Charlotte Derbyshire of Denver 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
The championships continue tomorrow at UNLV with the fourth round of doubles and rounds five and six of singles play. The tournament wraps up on Sunday with doubles semifinals and finals, followed by the singles finals.
