EUGENE, Ore. - Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon became 14th member of the University of Utah volleyball team's 1,000-kill club, but the Utes could not avoid a three-set loss at No. 21 Oregon (25-15, 25-19, 25-22) on Sunday in a Pac-12 Conference match at Matthew Knight Arena.
Utah (15-5, 4-4 Pac-12) saw its performance highlighted by Redd-Brandon, who became the 14th member of Utah's 1,000-kill club as she had seven kills with two errors on 18 swings for a .278 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield paced the Ute attack as she recorded her third straight double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, both marks were team highs. This was her ninth match with double-figures in kills (48 over her career) and her 14th match this season with 10 or more digs (43 for her career). The Provo, Utah native also tied for team-high honors with four blocks.
Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale turned in a .467 hitting percentage as she had seven kills without an attack error on 15 swings. She just missed setting a new season-high mark as her previous season-high mark was .500.
Sophomore setter Kendall Cygan had 16 assists and seven digs, while junior Kalee Kirby dished out 13 assists to go with three digs.
In her first career start, freshman libero Tess Sutton established a new career high with nine digs.
Junior middle blocker Bailey Bateman tied for match-high honors with Schofield with four blocks.
The Ducks claimed five of the first six points of the match and led by as many as 11 (18-7) before a 4-0 Utah run brought the Utes back to within seven (18-11) before taking the opener, 25-15. Utah outblocked Oregon, 3-0-1.0, in the opener. Bateman had two blocks in the first set, while Schofield and Redd-Brandon had three kills apiece.
There were four ties to start the second set, the last coming at 4-4, before Utah wedged out to a 6-4 lead. The Utes led by as many as three (10-7) before the Ducks tied the set for the fifth time at 10 points apiece and would take a 13-10 advantage after a 6-0 run. Oregon's lead would grow to as many as six (22-16) before going on to a 25-19 second-set win. Schofield had six kills in the set as Utah hit for a .343 efficiency in the second frame.
The Ducks scored the first four points of the third set and their lead would grow to as many as eight (19-11). The Utes responded with an 11-4 spurt to pull within one (23-22), but could not fend off a 25-22 win to clinch the match.
No. 21 Oregon (12-6, 5-3 Pac-12) was led by 20 kills, eight digs and two blocks by Liz Brenner.
The Utes return to the Huntsman Center after two weeks of road matches to face Arizona State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. MT.
