FLUSHING, N.Y. - University of Utah women's tennis won seven of its eight matches on the first day of the San Diego State Fall Classic II at the Aztec Tennis Center to remain largely in the winner's bracket entering the second round of play.
"This is a great start to the tournament for us, we just have to keep this going tomorrow," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "We are excited to be challenged this weekend."
Sarah Pham kicked off competition in the Red bracket, sweeping Kristen Poei (CSUN), 6-1, 6-2.
Callie Craig and Lucia Kovarcikova followed suit as members of the Black bracket. Craig defeated Mickey Hsu (CSUN), 6-0, 6-4, and Kovarcikova topped Tami Nguyen (SDSU), 6-4, 6-2.
Sarah Richter was successful in the Blue bracket with a win over Natalie Allen (UW), 6-3, 6-4.
Erica Valmaki competed in the Green bracket and came away with a victory over Leslie Chang (CSUN) 6-2, 6-3.
Luisa Gerstner da Rosa suffered defeat however as Natali Coronel (UW) won the match in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Gerstner da Rosa and Richter collaborated to bring down Erkeeva and Elliot (SMU), 8-1, while Pham and Craig grabbed a win over Kemp and Chen (UW), 8-5.
The Classic continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT with second-round play. Championship and consolation championship matches are scheduled for Sunday.
