The Utes are enjoying a three-game win streak after back-to-back victories over in-state opponents Utah Valley and BYU last week.
Utah is 5-4 through its first nine games this season. The Utes are 3-1 at home this season with victories over Denver (73-56 on Nov. 8), Nevada (61-57 on Dec. 7) and Utah Valley (81-70 on Dec. 14). Utah's only loss in the Huntsman Center this season came at the hands of No. 15/12 Nebraska in a 75-69 decision on Nov. 15.
Samford opened its season with a 62-60 win at Memphis on Nov. 10, but has since lost seven of its last nine. The Bulldogs' victories in that stretch came against South Alabama (70-49) on Nov. 30 in Boulder, Colo., at the Omni Thanksgiving Classic and in a 65-52 win at UNC Greensboro on Dec. 16.
Working (Double) Overtime: Utah earned an 82-74 double-overtime win at BYU in a Deseret First Credit Union Duel contest on Dec. 14 in the Marriott Center. Utah shot 50.0 (5-10) from the floor during the overtime periods, compared to 12.5 (2-16) for BYU. The Utes handed the Cougars their first loss of the season and this was Utah's first win over BYU since Mar. 11, 2011 and their first victory in Provo since Jan. 28, 2009.
Plouffe Named espnW National and Pac-12 Player of the Week: Senior forward Michelle Plouffe (Edmonton, Alberta) was named the espnW National Player of the Week as well as the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 16.
Utah became the first Pac-12 team to sweep the weekly awards this season. This was the first Pac-12 weekly honor for both Plouffe and Emily Potter (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and the third for the Utes since joining the conference.
Potter Earns Pac-12 Freshman of the Week: Potter was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Dec. 16 after averaging 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game to help Utah last week against Utah Valley and in the Deseret First Credit Union Duel at BYU. She shot 46.9 (15-32) from the floor, handed out two assists and made her second career steal.
Utes Value the Basketball: Utah is second in the Pac-12 this season with a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Utes have handed out 144 assists with 116 turnovers.
