Utah Swimming and Diving Midseason Update
SALT LAKE CITY- Beginning the new year, Utah swimming and diving welcomes the Arizona State Sun Devils to the Ute Natatorium on Sunday Jan.5, at 12 p.m. It is senior day for the men. It will be the last time seniors Karson Applin, Ken Tiltges and Caleb Herrick will compete at the Ute Natatorium. They will be honored before the meet in a senior day presentation.
"We are excited to kick off the second half of our season with a tough match-up against a very good ASU squad," said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra. "Every time we match up with another Pac-12 team is great practice and experience going towards the conference championships. Both teams will be swimming tired from tough fall training, but we will do everything we can to race hard and defend our home pool."
This will be the first time Utah has held a blackout. The team will be competing in black swim caps and suits. Black balloons will be given away and fans are encouraged to wear black.
MIDSEASON UPDATE- The Utah men are 3-0 this season and 1-0 in the Pac-12. The Utes have beaten two ranked teams, fifth-ranked Arizona and 23rd-ranked UNLV. Utah also has a win over Colorado Mesa. The Utah women are 4-1 and 1-1 in the Pac-12. Utah has wins over Oregon State, Boise State and UNLV. The Utes only loss this season came against 10th-ranked Arizona. Both the Utah men and women are ranked 22nd in the midseason College Swim Coaches Association of America poll.
The Ute swimmers have set 22 new school records with 37 NCAA standard times and 31 NCAA top 50 times.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION- Arizona State's last competition was the UNLV invitational where the women's team finished second with the men finishing fourth. The women had three swimmers finish in the top 10 and the men had four competitors who contributed to the score. The ASU women are currently ranked 17th in the latest CollegeSwimming.com poll.
