LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team fell 1-0 in a pitchers duel to Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon.
Junior college transfer Tanner Banks made his first career start on the mound for Utah, throwing 7 1/3 innings and surrendering just one run on four hits. Josh Chapman also pitched 2/3 of an inning, with one strikeout.
Utah had three hits on the day and stranded six runners on base throughout the game. All three of Utah's hits came at the start of an inning. TJ Bennett, Kody Davis and Tyler Relf each had hits for Utah.
The Utes looked to get on the board in the second inning after Bennett led off the inning with a single, before he was stranded on third base.
LMU scored its only run of the game in the third inning after singles from Cullen Mahoney and Matt Lowenstein.
The Lions looked to increase their lead in the seventh inning after the first two batters reached base before the Utes got out of the inning with a double play.
The Utes' Relf led off the top of the ninth inning with a single and was also left on third base.
Utah and LMU play the rubber match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT.
