LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Following the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Conference Championships, the Utah women's track and field team is in 12th with three points. Sophomore Rebekah Winterton tallied Utah's only points of the day with a sixth-place finish in the 10-kilometer race.
"Rebekah did a good job and hung tough throughout the entire race," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The 10K at the conference meet is a battle of toughness. We are really proud of Rebekah and excited for her."
Winterton, the Salt Lake City native scored Utah's only points of the day with her performance in the 10-kilometer race. Throughout the entire race, Winterton held solid in the second pack of runners for the fourth through sixth spots. With just six laps to go, Winterton positioned herself in the lead of the second group and fourth overall. However fatigue set in on the final three laps and she fell to sixth where she secured the finish, beating seventh place by 40 meters. Her performance earned three team points.
In the preliminary round of the 1500m, senior Amanda Mergaert ran a smooth race finishing with the fifth fastest time of 4:20.15. Mergaert earned a spot in the finals on Sunday, which will feature the top-1500m runners in the country.
The 800m featured the Utah runners making school history. For the first time in Utah history, two athletes qualified for the finals in the same event. Andrea Chavez earned the fifth-best time in the preliminary round, followed by Rosalie Griffin in the sixth spot. Both runners will compete in the finals on Sunday. Sophomore Ali Eisenbeiss fell just shy of qualifying, posting the 10th best time of the day.
Senior Lauryn McKay clocked season-best times in the 400m. McKay earned a time of 55.98 seconds for 20th.
Alyssa Johnson posted a lifetime-best mark in the 400m hurdles. Johnson recorded a time of 1:00.62 for 11th overall.
"Lauryn and Alyssa ran terrific races," Kepler said. "As a coach you cannot ask for anymore than personal-best marks. We just compete in a very tough league. I am proud of those two girls and very pleased with the effort they showed."
The throws fell just short of qualifying for the finals. In the shot put, Destanae Howerton-Davis recorded the 10th-best throw of 47-6.25 feet, but fell one place shy of earning a trip to the final round. While in the hammer throw, Utah captured 10th by Anneli Stahl and 11th by Aoife Hickey. Again the Utes fell just one spot shy of making it to the finals.
"We gave tremendous effort today," Kepler said. "I am very pleased with the type of effort our team showed. This league is tough and in order to make it to the finals, you must be on your game and run at lifetime-best marks."
The track and field team will compete next on Sunday at Loker Stadium on the campus of USC. Races will begin at 1 p.m. PT with the women's 4x100m relay.
