2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round Information
AUSTIN, Texas - Amanda Mergaert and Rosalie Waller each advanced in their respective events this evening for Utah Track and Field at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round.
"I thought every one of our athletes competed hard today," Head Coach Kyle Kepler said. "They could have been affected by the warmth, but they didn't worry about it. It was a typical Utah performance and I'm proud of every one of them."
Mergaert, who advanced to the NCAA Championships the past two years in the 1500, is in good shape to advance again this year. The senior had the top time in this evening's trials, winning her heat in 4:19.08 and moving on to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
"Amanda was in a fast heat and that helped her today", Kepler added. "I know she is excited about competing for a chance to get back to the NCAA Championships and she has the experience factor on her side."
Waller missed out on a PR time by seven-hundredths of a second but advanced in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:07.91 advances her to tomorrow night's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. after placing fourth in her heat.
"Rosalie ran very well and was also helped by being involved in a fast heat," Kepler stated. "She ran an extremely smart, tactical race and now has a chance to move on to Eugene."
Aoife Hickey finished in the top 20 of the hammer throw, narrowly missing out on the finals with a throw of 58.05. Anneli Stahl also competed in the event and had a throw of 56.98 meters.
Sophomores Susannah Hurst and Rebekah Winterton each ran in the evening's final event, the 10k. Hurst finish in 36:42.37 and Winterton finished in 37:19.54. Sophomore Alexandria Eisenbeiss finished with a time of 2:12.15 in the 800 meters and senior Stephanie Jolley ran the 400 hurdles in 1:02.92
"Rebekah finished 10 spots higher than she was seeded and Susannah really went for it," Kepler said. She was in it for three-quarters of the race and then the field separated. In the other races, Stephanie got healthier as the season progressed and getting her to this point was impressive. I also thought Alexandria gave a great effort in her run."
Tomorrow, junior Destanae Howerton-Davis takes part in the discus and senior Klaudia Rokossa participates in the pole vault.
