DENVER- Nick Soedel broke pool records in the 50 and 100 free races as the Utah swimming and diving teams are trailing Denver, with the men down 163-99 and the women down 140-122. Diving scores will be added from results at the Air Force Diving Invitational and the final score will be updated on Saturday.
Soedel broke pool records in the 50 free respectively (19.92) and 100 free respectively (43.82), winning both events.
Brianna Francis led the women with three race wins. She touched in first in the 100 breast (1:04.05) as well as the 200 breast (2:19.13) and the 200 IM (2:05.35). Sami Zuch won the 1,000 free (10:22.85). Zuch also placed second in the 500 free (5:01.67) and third in the 200 free (1:54.57). In the 200 fly, taking first was Petra Soininen (2:03.64). Soininen also took second in the 100 fly (56.03). Traycie Swartz touched in first in the 50 free (23.56) and finished second in the 100 free (50.84).
Jonah Holmstrom took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.23. Also the team of Soedel, Alex Fernandes, Holmstrom and Ken Tiltges touched in first in the 200 free relay (1:21.14).
Taking second in the 400 medley relay was the team of Swartz, Stina Colleou, Soininen and Giulianna Gigliotti with a time of 3:49.10, and the women were also second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.50 (Gigliotti, Nicole Ligeza, Soninen, Swartz). Teaming up for second as well in the 400 medley relay was the men's team of Kristian Kron, Tiltges, Fernandes and Soedel (3:20.70).
For the women Amanda Barrett took second in the 200 back (2:04.92) and fourth in the 200 free (1:55.22). Nicole Ligeza took third in the 100 breast (1:04.59) with Colleou following (1:05.43). Colleou was also second in the 200 breast (2:19.56). In the 200 fly, Sydney Bull touched in second with a time of 2:08.97 with Melissa Paahk taking third (2:09.19).Gigliotti finished third in the 100 free (52.64) and touched in fourth in the 100 back with a time of 58.75. Selin Ozturk touched third in the 500 free (5:06.46).
At the Air Force Diving Invitational, Kersten Merry took second on the platform dives with a score of 255.45 and fifth on the 1-meter dives (277.60).
On the men's side, Bence Kiraly took second in the 1,000 with a time of 9:18.17, as well as the 200 fly (1:52.29). Also taking second was Kristian Kron in the 100 back (51.69) and 200 back (1:51.54), Tiltges in the 100 breast (56.64) and Kiraly in the 500 free (4:33.51). Tiltges finished third in the 100 free (46.22).
Karson Applin took third in the 100 breast with a time of 56.81 while Dave Fraser took third in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.29. In the 200 breast, Brandon Young touched in fourth (2:09.91) with Nolan Rogers trailing in fifth (2:10.60). Dave Fraser took third in the 100 fly with a time of 49.85 with Fernandes touching in fourth (50.30).
Jacob Crayne took second in 3-meter dives at the Air Force Diving Invitational with a score of 341.10. Caleb Herrick took seventh with a score of 305.90.
The Utes only have two more duel meets remaining before the team competes at the Pac-12 Championships. The women host Washington State on Feb. 8, celebrating senior day, while the men compete against USC on Feb. 22.
