ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The University of Utah women's cross country team wrapped up the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships, finishing seventh in the team standings. The Utes were led by the 32nd-place performance of freshman Sarah Feeny.
"We ran really well in the first half of the race," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Some of our health issues and illnesses that are going around the team caught up to us in the second half and we finished seventh. It was not exactly where we hoped to finish, but our kids fought hard and did everything they could."
Leading the way for Utah was Feeny, who finished 32nd overall in a time of 22:08.79. Feeny was in sixth-place with 600-meters left to go, but couldn't hold on in the final stretch and fell to 32nd. Feeny just missed qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Championships later this month.
Finishing second for Utah and 37th overall was sophomore Jessica Sams. Coming off arguably her best race at the Pac-12 Conference Championships two weeks ago, Sams had another outstanding performance with a time of 22:14.75.
Crossing the line third for the Utes and 43rd overall was senior Rebekah Winterton. Rounding out the top five runners for Utah were Nikki Rietz in 59th (22:36.35) and Shaylen Crook in 75th (22:56.68).
Lauren Mills finished in the 78th spot with a time of 22:59.20, followed by Hannah McInturff who finished 86th clocking a time of 23:04.43.
The Utes finished the day seventh overall in the team standings with 246 points. The overall winner of the meet was Colorado with 43 points followed by New Mexico (56 points), BYU (112 points), and Northern Arizona (149 points).
"Our season unfortunately comes to an end today," Kepler said. "We will get everyone back and healthy over the break and get things ready to go for track. We know we have a lot of talent and young kids coming back for cross country next year, with more than half our roster being freshmen and sophomores. We are unfortunately losing three seniors: Rebekah Winterton, Lauren Mills and Nikki Rietz. All three of them have had terrific careers here at Utah. Rietz and Mills have improved greatly in our program and will be greatly missed due to using up their eligibility. I feel bad for Winterton because she really wanted to run a little bit better than she did today. It didn't materialize and you sometimes have days like and that. The fact that it all can come down to one day can sometimes be the beauty, and sometimes the hardest part of this sport."
