Chelsey Schofield-Olsen and
Shelby Dalton both notched double-doubles to lead Utah (1-0) to a season-opening win over Montana State (0-1) in the Utah Classic Friday evening at Crimson Court.
Despite falling behind early in the first set, Utah rallied back to win the set and eventually sweep the Bobcats in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-16).
"I thought [the match] went well," head coach
Beth Launiere said following the win. "I thought we did a lot of good things. We started out a little bit shaky and then settled right in. We got better as the match went on and that is what you want in the first match of the season.
After falling behind 14-11 early in the first set, Utah went on a 7-2 run to take an 18-16 advantage, which forced MSU head coach Kyle Weindel to call a timeout. Utah scored the next point and later took the first set, 25-21. Schofield-Olsen recorded four of her match-high 12 kills in the first set and freshman
Eliza Katoa was a perfect 4-for-4 in attack attempts as well.
Schofield-Olsen had five kills in the second set, but freshman
Adora Anae led all players with her six kills and the Utes would go up 2-0 in the match after taking the second set 25-21.
Utah opened the third set with a 4-1 advantage before MSU rallied back to tie it up 5-5. A little later in the set, the Utes had just a two-point lead up 13-11, but Utah tallied nine of the next 10 points and then went onto win 25-16 and sweep the season-opening contest.
"We saw a lot of good things from a lot of the players tonight," said Launiere. "I was very, very pleased with [tonight's performance].
Schofield-Olsen added a match-high 12 digs to notch the 36th double-double of her career, while Dalton had 10 kills to go along with 10 digs for her first-ever double-double.
Katoa tallied 11 kills and finished the evening with a .529 hitting percentage. She also tallied a team-high four block assists and senior
Bailey Bateman added three block assists on the evening as well.
The Utes recorded a .345 hitting percentage in the first contest of the season and redshirt freshman
Carly Trueman' led the way hitting .600 on the night.
Junior
Kendall Cygan notched a team-high 27 assists and freshman
Jessie Jorgensen added 17 as Utah finished with 49 assists on the evening.
Eli Svisco and Zoe Gogan led MSU with nine kills each and Katie Harrington led the team with a match-high 30 assists for the Bobcats.
The win marked the seventh straight season-opening victory for the Utes dating back to 2008 and the sixth straight win in a home-opener as well.
Utah continues action at the Utah Classic on Saturday with a pair of matches, beginning with a 10 a.m. match against Missouri State (0-1) before closing out the tournament against New Mexico State (1-0) at 7 p.m.
The Aggies defeated the Bears 3-0 in the first match of the Utah Classic earlier on Friday.
