BOZEMAN, Mont.- In her collegiate debut, true freshman Sarah Feeny led the Utes at the Montana State Invitational. Overall the Utes claimed four of the top ten spots en route to a second-place finish.
“We did a lot of things right, even though we didn’t come up with the victory,” head coach Kyle Kepler said. “I give Wyoming a lot of credit, they were the aggressors and came out really strong in the first mile. We held back just a little bit in the beginning trying not to get caught up in the hills, but closed really hard. If it was a 5k instead of a three-mile course we would have won, but we just ran out of real estate. We have a lot of things to build on and I am very impressed with the amount of depth we have right now. Some of our kids had slightly off days, but we are still getting better and our workouts are going in the right direction.”
Feeling sick earlier in the week, Feeny fought through the illness to capture the meet title with a time of 16:56.60. Feeny’s time was not only fast enough to capture first, but was also the eighth fastest time ever recorded on the MSU-Bridger Creek Couse.
“That’s a heck of a start to a college career,” Kepler said. “She came out here and ran really well, despite feeling under the weather for most of the week. I am really impressed with the way she raced and I am very pleased with our effort as a whole.”
Crossing the line second for the Utes and making her season debut was senior Rebekah Winterton who finished sixth overall with a time of 17:27.82. She was followed by Nikki Rietz (17:30.14) and Jessica Sams (17:33.25) in seventh and eighth.
Another debut for the Utes was redshirt freshman Hannah McInturff, who made her collegiate debut after being injured all of last season. McInturff finished the race in 12th-place with a time of 17:38.80.
“Adding Sarah, Rebekah and Hannah into the mix certainly gave us a boost,” Kepler said. “We were finally able to get Hannah healthy again, and she looked great today. She made the race look easy and I think we will send her out a little harder next time and try to be not as conservative.”
Other noticeable finishes for the Utes include: Shaylen Crook (19th, 17:51.17), Lauren Mills (22nd, 17:55.84), Sadie Wassum (25th, 18:08.74), Dana Snell (30th, 18:15.71), Andrea Chavez (34th, 18:20.16) and Dakota Grossman (50th, 18:43.65).
Overall, Utah finished second in the team standings for the third consecutive meet, tallying 33 points. The University of Wyoming captured first place with a total of 31 points.
The Utes compete next on October 4 at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
