POCATELLO, Idaho- The Utah women's track and field team finished up the Snake River Open on Saturday, coming away with sixteen top-five finishes and five event titles.
"I thought that we competed at a very high level today," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The kids came ready to go both physically and mentally. We simply talked about competing and trying to beat people and not worry about times or marks because those will come later in the year."
Sophomore Rhianna Williams led the charges for the Utes, capturing event titles in the 200 and 400-meter races. In the 400, Williams recorded the sixth best time in school history with a time of 56.38. She also had an impressive run in the 200, finishing with a time of 25.17.
Finishing just behind Williams in 400 was fellow sophomore Grace Englund. Englund recorded a time of 57.07 for second-place and Mesa Weidle finished in fourth.
In the 4x400 relay, Williams, Englund, Weidle and Atisme teamed up to take the win. The Ute quartet had a combined time of 3:54.06 in the event.
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Michelle Norman recorded impressive showings in both the long jump and 60-meter dash. In the long jump, Norman leaped a distance of 5.54 meters to capture the event title. In the 60, Norman recorded a time of 7.81 to finish second.
In the 800, the Utes had two athletes finish in the top-ten. Sophomore Makenzie Clark lead the way for the Utes, finishing first with a time of 2:19 and Allison Aafedt placed sixth with 2:23.37.
Sophomore Christine Van Brocklin represented the Utes in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing sixth with a time of 9.38.
Other notable performances for the Utes include: Alissa Atisme (2nd, 200), Kailey Hansen (3rd, high jump), Raynee Helm (1st, 60m open), Madison Lanford (10th, 200m open) and Megan Meier (2nd, 400m open).
The Utes will compete next on Jan. 24 at the Bronco Invite in Boise, Idaho.
"I think this meet will really help set us up for our next competition," Kepler said. "Great way to start the season with this group and we look forward to having some distance runners next week and keep the season moving forward."
