SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 21-ranked Arizona State Saturday evening at the Huntsman Center.
The Utes (9-18, 3-13 Pac-12) limited the 21st-ranked team to just .207 hitting on the evening, but the Sun Devils (19-8, 8-8 Pac-12) still managed to come away with sweep, despite just winning all three sets by a total of six points (23-25, 24-26, 23-25).
Utah outhit the Sun Devils, finishing the match with a .213 attack percentage, but Arizona State tallied two more kills and also came away with 2.5 more total team blocks than the Utes tallied on the evening.
ASU finished the contest with nine more digs then Utah (58-59) and both squads tied with three service aces, but the Utes recorded 10 service errors in the match compared with ASU's total of five.
The Sun Devils hit .275 and tallied 4.5 total team blocks en route to taking the first set 25-23 and going up 1-0 in the match. Utah trailed by as many as five points late in the set, down 21-16, before a 3-0 run pulled the Utes within two points. ASU called a time out and won the next two points to go up 23-19. Utah's 4-1 run pulled the home squad within a point, but ASU's Whitney Follette connected on her fifth kill of the set to give the Sun Devils the frame.
Both squads traded points back-and-forth throughout the majority of the second set and neither team led by more than two points, but ASU came away with the set, 26-24, and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at intermission. The Utes went up 23-22 on an ASU attack error, but ASU called a timeout and came out of the break winning four of the final five points.
Utah opened the third frame with a 5-1 run continued to lead the way until a 5-0 run pushed the Sun Devils ahead 20-18 late in the set. Utah countered with a 3-0 run and forced ASU to call a timeout, down a point, 21-20. ASU won the next two points to retake the lead 22-21 and that forced Utah to call its final timeout of the third set. The teams would trade points to close out the set, but it was ASU that came away with the win, 25-23, on a Utah attack error.
Adora Anae led Utah with 14 kills and 12 digs to record her Pac-12-leading 17th double-double of the season. Eliza Katoa followed with nine kills and Brenna DeYoung led all Utah players with five total blocks.
Kendall Cygan posted a team-high 21 assists and Jessie Jorgensen followed with 17 assists on the evening.
