UTAH vs. SAVANNAH STATE Post Game Quotes
Utah 99, Savannah State 53
Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On Utah's turnover improvement…
"It was still eleven turnovers. We set a goal to have eight. I think we had three illegal screens, so at least in one regard it is positive that we are trying to get people open. There was that one stretch where we were cleaned, having four turnovers in five possessions and they scored four out of five times. It's hard. We have got to keep making progress. Certainly eleven is better than what we have been dealing with. Moving forward, it is a focal point.
On moving the ball around…
"The thing that I was most pleased with, that I don't think we've been doing a great job with is the thirty assists on thirty-seven baskets. It is as well as we have been moving the ball together, collectively. I asked our players to stop thinking about "me" shots and start taking some "we" shots. It was kind of contagious early on. Brandon Taylor hit a couple of shots and then it spread to the rest of our teams."
On Lorenzo Bonam's performance…
"I think that he is getting more comfortable. It is all about role definition. Trying to define some roles is new for him, as well as some other guys on our squad. We want the ball in his hands. He is really hard to guard full court, as we saw. He is really as fast of player as I have seen in a long time, especially when he makes up his mind to go down hill. He also did a great job delivering the ball. We need to have someone get that started at the point of attack that is willing to make those passes. Most of those numbers are in the first half, he didn't play too much in the second half or else he may have had a really big night."
On Utah's energy…
"It was good. I really challenged our team. I am not proud of the fact that we are last in the Pac-12 in defensive field goal percentage. A lot of it is self-inflicted, and some of it is bad luck. Tonight, we opened up with one of their kids hitting two threes who has not made a three all year. You have to be able to battle through some of those perceived lucky shots. It was one of our best performances, in terms of field goal percentage. Getting in the low thirties is where we need to be. We have got to do a better job guarding."
On back court's performance…
"Well we need them. At this point, I don't think any of us are feeling really good about our offensive shooting. We have five guys who are struggling percentage-wise. Guys need to see the ball go in and at the same time, we are second in our conference in field goal percentage. A lot of that is driven by Jakob and Jordan has been shooting the ball well, and Kuzma. We haven't been clicking on all cylinders and that is a commitment that we made to each other. We have to execute better and share the ball. By sharing the ball tonight, it brough a lot of those guys into play. That has got to be definition, or characteristic, of Utah basketball. We aren't going ot be able to do it individually. When we start making plays for our teammates that is when we get six guys in double figures. I don't care, and I don't think our team cares, who leads us in scoring. Having multiple weapons is going to be really important for us to compete with some of the top teams."
On preparation for Duke…
"It's Duke. It is a lot of supreme athletes with seven or eight McDonald's All-Americans. They did a great job reloading from a year ago and they are a handful. The file is on my desk and I will start looking into it and watching some more film this evening and start figuring out a way to find a little chink in their armor."
On Brandon Taylor reaching 1,000 points…
"I'm happy to hear that. That probably made my night more than anything. I have been a little rough on Brandon. It wasn't a fun video session. You see what a guy is made of though because after a little bit of a dog house experience on Monday, it got his attention. He knows that he is better than he is and he cleaned himself up. It is fitting that Brandon looked today like he probably did when he was a little pup coming in here four years ago. For him to score 1,000 points is pretty cool.
Sophomore Forward Kyle Kuzma
On the team's and his own offensive performance…
"I think we just got back to basics and just fed the ball easy into the post. Everybody shared the ball and I think that was the biggest thing. I think coach said that we had 30 assists on 37 makes, so I think sharing the ball is the biggest reason for us having success tonight."
On defensive play…
"This week, not even this week, just Wichita State, we didn't really play a good defensive game and we all know that. I think we just had to focus on guarding guys today and it worked out for us."
On proving something to themselves…
"It's just another game for us. We just had a different mindset than the two losses we had. We just rebounded, shared the ball, and guarded guys so I think that was just the biggest reason."
On Lorenzo Bonam's play…
"I just saw from him that he wasn't forcing anything at all. If he saw gaps he attacked them and if he didn't he slowed it down and passed the ball. He just let the offense go through and in transition he was a killer. He really pushes the ball and he looks ahead. That's one of his good traits that he has and I just think that's the biggest thing. He's really aggressive."
