- Complete Naismith Award Watch List
- Complete Oscar Robertson Award Watch List
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah sophomore Jakob Poeltl has been named to both the Naismith Trophy and Oscar Robertson Trophy watch lists, it was announced this week.
Poeltl, a 7-0 sophomore out of Vienna, Austria, adds to his preseason accolades after earning preseason All-America honors by both USA Today (Honorable Mention) and CBS Sports (Third Team), while also being named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and John R. Wooden Award watch lists.
The Naismith Award is overseen by the Atlanta Tipoff Club and since 1969, recognizes the national player of the year. The watch list includes 50 student-athletes from around the country and a list of 30 mid-season candidates will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016. A national vote of basketball coaches, administrators and journalists will narrow the group to four finalists based on player performance throughout the season. The final four Naismith finalists will be made up and the player of the year is voted on by the group. The winner will be announced on Sunday, Apr. 3, 2016.
Poeltl is one of five Pac-12 student-athletes named to the Naismith watch list, which also includes California's Jaylen Brown and Tyrone Wallace, along with Arizona's Ryan Anderson and Oregon State's Gary Payton II.
The Oscar Robertson Trophy trophy is awarded annually by the United States Basketball Writers Association. The USBWA, comprised of nearly 1,000 sports journalists covering college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites, will select the recipients of the award later this season.
Among Poeltl's nod on the list, OSU's Payton and Cal's Wallace rounded out the nominations from the Pac-12.
Poeltl has paced Utah to a 6-1 record to open the 2015-16 season, averaging a double-double and leading the Utes in both scoring (21.3 ppg) and rebounding (10.4 rpg). He was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week back on Nov. 23 following a career-high 32-point effort in a win over Temple in the final game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Poeltl has recorded a double-double in five of seven games this season after notching a double-double in just three games during his freshman campaign in 2014-15. He has scored at least 15 points in all six contests, which includes three games with 20-points or more. He has also blocked a shot in all seven games this season and has at least one blocked shot in 10 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Utah is back in action this Saturday, Dec. 5, hosting IPFW in Salt Lake City. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center.
