SURPRISE, Ariz. - Bret Helton pitched over seven strong innings as the Utah baseball team fell to Kansas State in the bottom of the ninth, 3-2, on Thursday evening in Surprise, Ariz., at the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, KSU hit a double that was just fair down the right field line. The next batter was intentionally walked in an attempt to set up a double play. Although Ute pitcher Dylan Drachler was able to get an infield ground ball, the Utes were unable to get the double play and the delay getting to first caused the batter to be safe as well, loading the bases. A single up the middle lifted Kansas State to the win.
Helton pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts. Drachler entered in the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout. He falls to 0-2 with the loss.
Utah was led at the plate by Cody Scaggari, who went 2-for-4 on the night. Dallas Carroll and Wyler Smith drove in Utah's two runs.
Kansas State got on the board first in the bottom of the second. With one out, an error put a runner on base which led to an RBI triple. The Utes got the runner on third out with a rundown after an infield ground ball.
Utah got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Kody Davis singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a balk and third after Scaggari's single. Carroll drove in Utah's first run of the game with an RBI single. Smith also had an RBI single in the inning to give the Utes the lead. Wade Gulden looked to keep it going with a ball to deep center field but the fielder made a great catch to end the Utah rally.
Kansas State tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, KSU beat out a slow roller for an infield single. Carroll snagged a hard grounder to third for the second out of the inning, but KSU would score on an RBI single to bring the score to 2-2.
Kansas State put a runner on after an error in the bottom of the seventh, but quick reflexes on a liner back to the pitcher doubled the runner up. The leadoff hitter also singled in the bottom of the eighth for KSU but the Utes got out of the inning after a sacrifice bunt, fly out and ground out.
The Utes had just one base runner after the fourth inning.
Utah continues at the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge with Kansas on Friday, Feb. 20, at Cubs Park in Mesa, Ariz.
