MESA, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team fell to ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, 10-2, at the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Cubs Park in Mesa, Ariz.

Although the Utes took an early 1-0 lead, the Cowboys scored two runs in the second, two runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning. Utah added a run in the ninth inning.

Andre Jackson went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in both of Utah's runs. Wyler Smith (2-for-4) also had two hits.

On the mound, Jayson Rose pitched five innings, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He earned the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. Spencer Johnson entered in the sixth inning, allowing three runs on three hits, while Dustin Hughes pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout. Tanner Thomas pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Smith hit a one-out single to right field. He stole second to move into scoring position and scored on Jackson's single through the right side.

Oklahoma State quickly pulled ahead in the third with a solo home run, which was followed by a triple setting up a score on a ground out. In the fifth, a leadoff walk and ground-rule double set up a two-RBI single for the Cowboys. OSU's four-run sixth inning saw four Cowboy hits, and three hits in the seventh inning led to two runs.

Utah put two runners on base in the seventh inning with no outs before OSU got three-straight strikeouts to end the rally. The Utes also stranded two on in the eighth when Kody Davis beat out a bunt for an infield single and Kyle Hoffman walked with no outs, but again the Cowboys pitchers got two fly outs and a strikeout to shut the Utes down. Both teams left eight runners on base throughout the game.

In the ninth, pinch-hitter Connor Caspersen drew a walk and scored when Jackson hit a double to center field.

The Utes close out the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge against Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Goodyear Complex in Goodyear, Ariz., at noon.
