THIBODAUX, La. - After dropping game one, 3-1, the Utah baseball team rallied to win game two of a doubleheader against Nicholls State, 2-1.
After dropping game one, the Utes took a quick 2-0 lead in game two with Cody Scaggari reaching on a one-out error. Dallas Carroll hit an RBI double down the right field line and Cole Taylor hit an RBI single up the middle for Utah's two runs. It would be all that Utah would need, as Nicholls State mustered its only run in the game in the sixth inning after a pair of leadoff singles. Both teams left seven runners on throughout the game.
Dallas Carroll and Taylor each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two. Dalton Carroll picked up the win on the mound, pitching seven innings with six strikeouts, allowing eight hits and one walk. Hunter Rodriguez threw the final two innings for his first save of the year, allowing no walks or hits with three strikeouts.
"It was a tough field to hit at today with the wind blowing in," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Dalton and Hunter Rodriguez really pitched great in the second game. Our defense and pitching was outstanding in game two to hold them to one run and win the ballgame."
In game one, Nicholls State scored an unearned run in the first inning off an error and took a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The Utes scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning after Scaggari doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly of the bat of Hunter Simmons.
Utah had six hits compared to five for Nicholls State in the first game. Jayson Rose had a strong outing on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts. Spencer Johnson allowed one hit over the final two innings.
The Utes and Colonels close out their four-game series on Sunday, March 1, at 1:00 CT.
