TUCSON, Ariz. - A steady offensive night led the Utah baseball team to a 7-4 win over Arizona on Saturday night, evening the three-game series at 1-1.
The Utes had 12 hits, led by three hits each from Wyler Smith and Max Schuman. Schuman drove in three runs, including a two-run home run as part of a three-run fifth inning. The Utes capitalized on their opportunities with runners on base, while forcing Arizona into leaving 14 runners stranded.
Dalton Carroll pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. He raises his record to 3-2 with the win. Nolan Stouder pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits with a strikeout, while Hunter Rodriguez pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.
Utah took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Smith singled and Schuman doubled to lead off the inning. AJ Young grounded out to send in a run and Josh Rose hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI. Utah increased its lead to 3-0 in the third. Kody Davis and Cody Scaggari both hit infield singles and Dallas Carroll walked to load the bases with no outs. Smith hit a ground ball for an out at home before Schuman singled to left field to send home a run.
Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the third after a wild pitch on a strikeout, a single sent home a run to cut Utah's lead to 3-1.
The Utes took a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning. Davis beat out an infield single and moved to second on an error. He scored on Dallas Carroll's RBI single, and Schuman followed with his second home run of the series to clear the bases.
Arizona continued to chip away at the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Each team added a run in the seventh. Two hit by pitches put two runners on followed by an RBI single from Smith for the Utes, and back-to-back one-out hits gave Arizona a run to put the Utah lead at 7-3. The Wildcats hit back-to-back leadoff singles in the bottom of the eighth and although Arizona added a run on a ground out, a pair of strikeouts helped end the inning.
The Ute pitchers forced Arizona into leaving 14 runners on base throughout the game.
