SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team will send a full team of 12 skiers to the 2015 NCAA Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence College in Lake Placid, N.Y., from March 11-14.
Of Utah's 12 skiers competing at the NCAA Championships, all but two have Championship experience. Seven skiers have previously earned All-America honors.
"This is an incredible squad we are bringing to the NCAA Championships," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "I am ecstatic with the make up of this group. We have some extremely well seasoned veterans as well as a couple of newcomers. There is excellent talent, motivation and team chemistry. We had to make a few difficult decisions after regionals on who select. I was so impressed how hard everyone attacked in both Alaska Invites. It really pushed everyone so I can honestly say the whole team is for sure in this one. We need to rest up, cure a few colds and bumps and bruises, and get the books squared away. We leave toward the end of this week, will do some fine tuning on the East Coast and jump into competitions on March 11."
In women's alpine, Kristiina Rove, Chloe Fausa and Ana Kobal will represent the Utes. Rove and Kobal are both making their third appearance at NCAAs. Rove is a two-time All-American, finishing second in the giant slalom in 2014 and fourth in 2013. This season she has four podium finishes and six top-five finishes. Kobal is also a two-time All-American, finishing fifth in the slalom and sixth in the GS at the 2013 championships. She has two podium finishes and five top-10 finishes this year. Fausa earned All-America honors as a freshman last year in the giant slalom, finishing third. She has two wins and four podium finishes this season.
The men's alpine team is led by Andy Trow, who is making his third appearance at the NCAA Championships. He is a two-time All-American, earning honors in the slalom in both 2013 and 2014. Trow has one podium finish and six top-10 finishes this year. Joergen Brath earned All-America honors in the giant slalom last year as a freshman. He has six top-10 finishes this year. Freshman Endre Bjertness will be making his first NCAA Championships appearance this season. He has seven top-10 finishes this year and is coming off a second-place finishing in the slalom at the RMISA Championships.
Freshman Veronika Mayerhofer is making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships in women's Nordic. She has three wins in 10 races and hasn't finished lower than fourth this year. Three-time All-American Sloan Storey is making her third appearance at NCAAs. She earned both freestyle and classical All-America honors last year, and this season she has two podium finishes and six top-five finishes. Anna-Lena Heynen also competed at NCAAs last year. She has seven top-10 finishes this year.
All three men's Nordic skiers who competed at the NCAA Championships last year return this year in Niklas Persson, Noé Bellet and Kevin Bolger. Persson is a two-time All-American, finishing third in the classical race at NCAAs last season. He has three podium finishes and five top-five finishes this year. Bellet is a two-time NCAA qualifier, competing at the championships last year after serving as an alternate as a freshman. He has five top-10 finishes this year. Bolger competed at NCAAs as a freshman last year. This year he has six top-10 finishes.
The NCAA Championships kick off on Wednesday, March 11, with the men's 10-km and women's 5-km freestyle races. The alpine teams begin on Thursday, March 12, with the men's and women's giant slalom. Nordic continues on Friday, March 13, with the women's 15-km and men's 20-km classical races while the Championships wrap up on Saturday, March 14, with the men's and women's slalom. All events will be webcast live at NCAA.com.
