SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team fell to BYU, 16-6, on Tuesday evening.
The teams combined for nine runs on 10 hits in the first inning, and BYU pulled ahead with a five-run second and six-run sixth inning.
The Utes scattered seven hits among seven different players, with six players driving in runs.
Utah used four pitchers. Nolan Stouder allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with one strikeout, and falls to 0-5 with the loss. Tanner Thomas pitched five innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Trenton Stoltz pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while Hunter Rodriguez pitched the final inning, striking out two of the four batters he faced.
A wild first inning saw BYU score five runs on five hits with the Utes scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. Both starting pitchers did not make it out of the first inning.
BYU added to its lead in the second inning, scoring five runs on six hits to take a 10-4 lead.
The Utes got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Biss Larsen led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a dropped ball error on a ground ball from Josh Rose. After both runners moved over on a balk, Kody Davis and Cody Scaggari both hit sacrifice fly balls to score a pair of runs, cutting the BYU lead to 10-6.
BYU continued to pull ahead with a six-run sixth inning, taking a 16-6 lead.
Utah continues at home this weekend for a three-game series against Oregon, beginning Friday, May 15, at 5:00 p.m. MT.
