SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team concluded Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage with the White team coming away with a 3-0 victory over the Red team in the team's final tune-up before the regular season begins next Friday.
The White team, which consisted of current Ute players, downed the Red team - consisting of four former alumni (Bailey Bateman, Kalee Kirby, Kate Robison-Holdeman and Cinthia Silva-Angus) and various current Utes - in straight sets, 25-10, 25-13 and 25-17. The White team picked up another set as both squads continued to play for the fans in attendance.
"I think it went well tonight and maybe even better than expected," said senior setter Kendall Cygan. "It did not seem that a lot of the players had any nervousness going on and hopefully that will carry over into next Friday. I thought we played well as a team and it was good preparation for our first match."
The White team took set one, 25-10, with Adora Anae and Carly Trueman leading the way with three kills each. Cygan tallied four assists in the set and Trueman also added a solo block. Bateman and Holdeman recorded two kills each for the Red team.
The White team went up 2-0 in the match after taking the second set, 25-13. Anae and Eliza Katoa had three kills each and Jessie Jorgensen led the squad with nine assists. Alyssa Koenig led the way for the White team though, netting five kills on six total attacks and four block assists. Bateman led the way with four kills on the alumni's side of the net.
The White team would end up sweeping the Red team following a 25-17 win in set three. Koenig recorded five more Kills for the Utes on the White side of the net and Cygan tallied six assists. Madison Legerski, who played with the alumni on the Red team in set three, led the way with three kills, while Kirby tallied five assists and three digs.
Despite the White team sweeping the Alumni, both squads would play a fourth set for the fans in attendance and the White team again would come away with the win, 25-19. Bateman led the alumni with three kills in the set, while Emma Kirst tallied five kills playing for the Red team. Katoa led the White team with four kills and Caroline Sipiora posted a set-high five digs.
Bateman tallied a team-high 10 kills on the evening for the Red team and Kirby finished the match with 26 assists. Holdeman had six kills and Silva-Angus recorded three kills and seven digs.
Anae led the Utes with 13 kills, while Katoa (12 kills) and Koenig (10 kills) both posted double-figure efforts as well. Koenig led Utah and the White team with a .615 hitting percentage on the night.
"I thought Alyssa played so great tonight," said Cygan. "She really stepped up her game out there and that is very encouraging heading into the season."
Jorgensen led the White team with 20 assists, while Cygan tallied a double-double with 18 assists and a team-high 10 digs.
Utha will resume its regular practice schedule on Monday and continue to prepare for its home and season-opener on Friday against Idaho State. First serve between the Utes and Bengels is set for 7 p.m. on Friday at the Huntsman Center.
