LOGAN - After dropping the first set to Utah State, the Utah volleyball team managed to comeback and win three-straight to down the Aggies in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19) Tuesday evening at Wayne Estes Center.
Adora Anae (12 kills, 10 digs) and Jessie Jorgensen (24 assists, 12 digs) posted double-doubles, while helping guide the Utes to the non-conference victory.
The Utes moved to 3-1 overall with the win, while the Aggies fell to 1-3. It was Utah's fourth straight win against the Aggies and ninth victory in the previous 11 matches between the two squads.
The Aggies would use a 6-1 run early in set one to take a 10-5 lead and despite Utah climbing back to pull within two points, down 19-17, Utah State managed to score six of the final nine points to take the set 25-20.
Both teams would trade points throughout the majority of the first half of set two, but after Utah State tied things up at 16-16, the Utes would go on a 7-3 run to take a 23-19 lead and force the Aggies to call a timeout. Utah State would win four of the next five points, but Anae's kill gave Utah the set, 25-23, to tie the match up at 1-1.
The Utes opened the third set winning 10 of the first 13 points to take a seven point lead, up 10-3, but the Aggies would manage to climb back into the match and pulled within two points following an 8-3 run. Utah countered with a 4-0 run to go up 17-12 and later closed out the set with a 6-2 run to take the set, 25-16, and a 2-1 lead in the match.
After going up 7-5 in the fourth set, both teams would trade 14 straight points, but Utah finally broke the trend with a 3-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. Another 3-1 run pushed Utah's lead to 21-15 and the Utes would later close out the match winning thee of the final four points to take the set, 25-19, and the match 3-1.
Anae finished the match with a team-high 12 kills, while both Alyssa Koenig and Berkeley Oblad added new career-highs with nine kills each. Kendall Cygan tallied a team-high 25 assists and Tess Sutton totaled a team-best 13 digs on the evening.
The Utes, who outblocked the Aggies 14.0 to 4.0 in total team blocks, was led at the net by Koenig's eight and Brenna DeYoung's six total blocks. Utah tallied one solo block (DeYoung) and 26 block assists, while Utah State managed just eight block assists.
Utah tallied a season-low .254 hitting percentage, but it was more than enough as the Aggies hit just .140 on the evening.
Utah returns to action this weekend with three matches at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane, Wash. The Utes will take on Montana this Friday and close out the tournament with matches against Wyoming and Gonzaga on Saturday.
