SEATTLE, Wash.- The Utah track and field team wrapped up the first day of action at the MPSF Championships will several impressive performances. The Utes were led by the ninth place performance of the distance medley relay team.
"We had some solid performances," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We aren't on the scoreboard yet, but we were only in three finals today. We brought a lot, and ran a lot, of really young kids. We have redshirted a handful of kids that we will get back in outdoors, in Grace (Englund), Andrea (Chavez) and Jessica (Sams). We are down a few bodies and we know that. We have done that for their development and the team's development."
"Overall, I thought we gave great effort," Kepler continued. "I thought that everybody ran and competed hard. Tomorrow we will definitely be looking at the scoreboard a little more intently. Hopefully we will get a great night sleep and get up and back here early tomorrow morning."
Competing in the last event of the night, the Utah distance medley just missed scoring a team point by one-hundredth of a second. The relay comprised of Sadie Wassum, Mesa Weidle, Caitie Faust, and Dakota Grossman finished just behind the University of Arizona with a time of 11:47.93.
"I thought those guys ran hard," Kepler said. "It was a chance for some of those younger guys to get some experience. We decided to run a younger group rather than a more experienced group that probably would have scored quite a few points. The experienced gals have some individual races tomorrow that we wanted to keep them fresh for."
The pentathlon featured two Utes competing. Competing in a total of five events, true freshman Lauren McCluskey finished 14th overall with a total of 3159 points. Sophomore Madison Lanford placed 17th with 2880 points.
In the 60-meter dash, junior Alissa recorded a new season-best time of 7.78 seconds to earn 27th overall.
True freshman Lauren McCluskey represented the Utes in the long jump, claiming 18th after leaping a distance of 16 feet, 8.5 inches.
Sophomore Shaylen Crook led the charge in the 5,000-meter, clocking a time of 17:18.24 en-route to an 28th place finish. Accompanying Crook was redshirt senior Kate Stringfellow and Jocelyn Todd. Stringfellow recorded a time of 17:20.25 for 21st followed by Todd in 23rd.
At the conclusion of the first day of action the University of Oregon is in first place with 32 team points followed by Arizona State and USC tied for second with 23 points.
The MPSF Championships will continue Saturday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. PT with the women's high jump.
