SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 63 Utah women's tennis team claimed victory over the Arizona Wildcats at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"It was great to start the Pac-12 1-0 with a win over a very good Arizona team," Utah head coach Mat Iandolo said. "It was a great doubles point win and the freshmen really stepped it up in the singles."
Utah's Sarah Richter and Alexia Petrovic def. Inge Hendrikx and Samantha Czarniak 6-3 to open up the match.
They were closely followed by Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley clinching the doubles point over Lauren Marker and Shayne Austin 6-4.
Petrovic continued her hot season and defeated Inge Hendrikx 6-2, 6-1. Arizona won the No. 2 singles point to bring the match to 2-1.
Taylor Calton beat Samantha Czarniak 6-3, 6-3 to put the Utes up 3-1 but the Wildcats immediately brought it back to 3-2 with a win at the No. 1 singles position. Turley clinched the match for Utah with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Camila Wesbrooks.
The Utes face off against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, Mar. 13. The doubles matches will begin at 1 p.m. MST and the match will be televised by Pac-12 Network with singles play beginning at 2 p.m. MST.
