TEMPE, Ariz.- The Utah distance runners kick started the first day of competition at the Baldy Castillo Invitational with five Utes competing in the 1,500-meter run.
"I thought they all ran hard," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We haven't done a lot of race-specific work since the end of the indoor season, so about two to three weeks. That showed a little bit tonight, but that should solve itself. A few of them have had some illnesses that they have been dealing with, so we also need to focus on getting healthy in that way. Overall, it was a solid start for the outdoor season. Hopefully we will have some good performances tomorrow."
Redshirt senior Nikki Rietz led the way for the Utes, competing for the first time since last year's outdoor season. Rietz seemed to pick up right where she left off, recording a time of 4:34.22 to capture 13th. Sadie Wassum and Caitlin Faust accompanied Rietz with impressive performances. Wassum crossed the finish line in 23rd with a personal-best time of 4:42.44, followed by Faust in 28th (4:46.12). Dakota Grossman and Dana Snell also competed for the Utes, finishing 31st and 33rd, respectively.
The Utes will return to competition tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's long jump.
