PALO ALTO, Calif.- Andrea Chavez recorded a personal best time in the 1,500-meter race at the Stanford Invitational to lead Utah on the first day of a busy weekend of competition.
"We are in a good place," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "It is early in the season and we are running close to lifetime bests. We trained particularly hard these last couple of weeks, with high mileage, and it showed today. We are biding our time and getting our training in now so we can be good when we want to be."
Chavez led the way for the Utes in the 1,500, recording a new personal best time of 4:25.01 to capture third in section four. Sarah Feeny competed in section 1, finishing 11th with a time of 4:23.28. Hannah McInturff and Nikki Rietz also represented Utah in the event. McInturff captured eighth in sections five (4:32.62) and Rietz placed tenth in section seven (4:33.00).
True freshman Chrissy Glasmann competed in the javelin for Utah. Glasmann captured tenth with a throw measuring 133 feet, 11 inches.
Meanwhile up the road at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, four Utes recorded personal bests.
Leading the way in the 5,000 was redshirt senior Kate Stringfellow. Stringfellow recorded a personal best time of 17:06.08 to place 19th overall. Accompanying Stringfellow was sophomore Shaylen Crook and senior Jocelyn Todd. Crook ran personal best time of 17:11.73 for 25th and Todd placed 45th with a time of 17:36.06.
Representing Utah in the 1500 and 800-meter races was sophomores Sadie Wassum and Dakota Grossman. Wassum placed 39th in the 800 (2:18.78) and 41st in the 1500 (4:42.12). Grossman earned 49th in the 800 (2:20.11) and 43rd in the 1500 (4:42.20).
Recording a personal best in the 3,000-meter steeple was junior Dana Snell. Snell recorded a time of 11:17.02 to capture 37th overall.
Three Utah athletes competed in the 5,000-meter run at the UVU Invitational. Leading the charge was true freshman Megan Spehar, placing sixth with a time of 18:46.44. Hannah Allred captured seventh in 19:01.70, followed by Jade Mulvey in tenth (10:56.27). Jessica Sams also competed unattached, earning second overall with a time of 17:58.07.
The Utes will return to action Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. beginning with the women's 800 at 2:07 p.m. PST.
