SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Utah track and field team closed out competition Saturday at the UW Invitational led by juniors
Grayson Murphy and
Hannah McInturff and freshman
Amanda Gehrich, who all cracked into the top-10 all-time indoor records in Utah history.
Â
"I am very pleased with the results here on day two and there is a lot of good things that happened today. We progressively got better as the day went on," head coach
Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Gehrich recorded the fourth fastest time in the mile run in Utah indoor history, clocking in a 4:49.33 to earn 17
th place overall.
Â
"Amanda had a solid race and had a big negative split. She ran very competitive in her heat. It is a great opener for her in her first collegiate mile and fourth on the all-time list so that is solid," Kepler said.
Â
In the 3000-meter run, Utah was led by junior
Grayson Murphy after she recorded a top-20 performance and landed fourth all-time in Utah indoor history after finishing in a time of 9:29.71 to earn 18
th place. Junior
Hannah McInturff recorded a personal best time of 9:35.89, which also landed her sixth all-time in Utah indoor history in the 3000. McInturff placed 29
th overall.
Â
Junior
Jessica Sams completed the race in a time of 9:44.68 to earn a 38
th place finish. Rounding out the 3000-meter run for Utah was senior
Becky Sarmiento, who finished the race with a time of 9:51.92 to place 47
th, while also recording her personal best in the 3000-meter run.
Â
"I thought all of these kids ran really well and for three of the four that was their opening race. I thought they really stayed engaged and had great moves. Definitely used their experience," Kepler explained.
Â
Sophomore
Caitlin Faust competed in the 800-meter run for the Utes where she placed 28
th, finishing the race in a time of 2:14.11.
Â
"Faust ran solid. The third 200 wasn't the best, it just wasn't fast enough and it probably added a couple seconds on to her time. She got out nice but waited to long to make her move. We know how to correct that and we will go back and work on that at practice," Kepler stated.
Â
Sophomore
Sadie Wassum and freshman
Poppy Tank were also featured in the mile. Wassum and Tank finished in 53
rd and 54
th places, respectively. Wassum finished the race in a time of 5:02.51 and Tank finished with a time of 5:03.3.
Â
"Our milers ran hard but obviously looked a little rusty from not having raced yet, particularly Poppy. Their just trying work their way into the season from a racing standpoint as time evolves," Kepler said. Â
Â
The Utes will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, at the Jackson's Invitational in Boise, Idaho.Â
