SALT LAKE CITY – Utah sophomore setter
Bailey Choy has been named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Volleyball Team, the organization announced on Thursday.
Â
Choy was named an Academic All-District First Team selection and will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot. The Academic All-America teams will be announced in December.
Â
Choy becomes the eighth player in school history to be named CoSIDA Academic All-District and the sixth player overall to earn first team honors. She is the first Utah player to be named to the all-district team since Bailey Bateman (first team) and Lea Adolph (second team) were both honored in 2014.
Â
Choy currently leads the team, ranks fifth in the conference and 99
th in the nation with 997 assists, while averaging 9.50 assists per set. She is a key figure in Utah's 13.71 team assists per set average, which ranks first in the Pac-12 and No. 9 in the nation. Choy, who has tallied 50-plus assists in five matches this season, is just three assists shy from eclipsing the 1,000-assist mark on the year and would become just the fourth player since 2004 to register at least 1,000 kills in a season.
Â
Choy is also tied for third on the team with 246 digs, while averaging 2.34 digs per set. Utah ranks second in the conference in total digs and third in the league in digs per set. She has also tallied 12 double-doubles on the season.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have completed one full calendar year at their institution.
