Utah Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. CSU Bakersfield, Wins Game Two 7-5

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Utah baseball team split a doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield to open the season, falling in game one 6-5 before coming back to win game two, 7-5.
In game one, Bakersfield broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the seventh inning. Although Utah got a run back in the eighth, the Utes couldn't rally in the ninth. Five different players each had two hits in the loss at the plate for the Utes.
The second game saw the Utes rally from a pair of deficits, coming back from down 3-0 to take a 4-3 lead, and also coming back from a 5-4 deficit with a three-run seventh inning for the win. Jacob Rebar struck out nine of the 14 batters he faced after throwing the final four innings while Chandler Anderson went 3-for-3 at the plate and Josh Rose had two RBI.
Anderson went 5-for-7 overall at the plate between the two games while Dallas Carroll was 4-for-6 on the day.
Several Utes made their career debuts, including Rebar, Oliver Dunn, Dominic Foscalina, Connor McNally, Alex Isola, Jake Portaro.
Game 1
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., Dunn, Carroll, Wade Gulden and Anderson were the players who each had two hits in the loss. Keirsey, Dunn, Carroll, Hunter Simmons and Max Schuman each drove in runs.
Jayson Rose earned the start, throwing four innings and allowing four runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Tanner Thomas pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings, while Trenton Stoltz allowed two runs on three hits and earned the loss. Josh Tedeschi surrendered one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Utah took an early 1-0 lead behind back-to-back hits from Carroll and Simmons in the first inning. Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead in the second off three hits, and the Utes came back to tie it at 2-2 in the top of the third with a run after singles from Keirsey, Jr. and Dunn led to a sacrifice fly from Carroll.
Bakersfield jumped back out front with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning for a 6-4 lead before Utah rallied back in the sixth with two runs to tie the score at 4-4. Gulden and Anderson both had hits in the inning and Zack Moeller was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out. Schuman walked to send home a run while a sacrifice fly off the bat of Keirsey drove in another run before a strikeout ended the inning.
Bakersfield pulled ahead with two runs in the seventh for a 6-4 lead to take the lead. Although the Utes got a run back in the eighth after a walk to pinch hitter McNally and hits from Keirsey and Dunn, Utah couldn't rally in the late innings.
Game 2
Bakersfield struck first with a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Utah left runners on base in each of the first four innings (including loading the bases in the fourth) before breaking through in the fifth with four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Dunn and Carroll singled while Simmons walked to load the bases for Josh Rose, who doubled to send in two runs. Anderson also had an RBI single while Rose stole home on a strikeout.
The Roadrunners came back to take 5-4 lead with two runs in the fifth after three hits.
The Utes rallied in the seventh to retake the lead, scoring three runs. Rose started the inning with a single, Anderson was hit by a pitch and Gulden also singled to load the bases for Ellis Kelly, who sent in a run with an RBI single while a second run scored on an error. Keirsey also hit a line drive up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher for an RBI single to round out Utah's scoring.
Rebar shut down CSUB the remainder of the way to help Utah hold on to the win. Riley Ottesen earned the start, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over five innings.
