Provo-- University of Utah women's tennis defeated in-state rival BYU, 6-1, in Provo on Friday, for their first road victory of the season.
The Utes dropped the doubles point when Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley fell to Savannah Ware-Avina and Samantha Smith, 6-4 and Taylor Calton and Jena Cheng lost to Kate Cusick and Natella Nabieva, 7-5.
The Utes rebounded in singles competition, winning all six matches. Turley recorded the first singles point when she defeated Natella Nabieva, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Calton also recorded a dominant win over Alana Bourgeois, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot. Pletcher and Petrovic each recorded three-set victories before Whitney Turley defeated Taylah Beckman in a hard-fought match, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 to complete the singles sweep.
Head Coach Mat Iandolo said, "This was a hard-fought victory over a spirited BYU team that played inspired on their home court! While we played very tight in the doubles, we loosened up and played solid disciplined singles."
The Utes will travel to face Arizona State on Mar. 10 at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona on Mar. 11 at noon. They will be back at home to face North Carolina State at the Eccles Tennis Center on Mar. 13 at 5 p.m.
